Sinner surprises Alcaraz at Monte Carlo

World number one Carlos Alcaraz admits he was surprised to see Jannik Sinner competing in the Monte Carlo Masters after the Italian's quick turnaround from hard courts.

Alcaraz, addressing the media in Monaco, explained his surprise at Sinner's participation despite the quick transition from hard court in Miami to clay in Monaco. "It's tricky when you don't have that much time to prepare yourself for another surface," said the Spaniard, noting Sinner's adaptation to different conditions as impressive.

Sinner's absence from last year's clay swing due to suspension leaves him with minimal points to defend, potentially allowing him to reclaim the world number one ranking from Alcaraz depending on his results in Monte Carlo. If Sinner wins the tournament, he will return to the top spot regardless of other results.
