Ridley Urges Tightening Golf Ball Distance Rules

Fred Ridley, chairman of the Masters, warned that modern golf balls are traveling too far and urged the USGA and R&A to enforce stricter distance limits by 2030.

During his State of the Masters address, Ridley highlighted a 325‑yard drive by amateur Jackson Herrington and said Augusta National will continue to adjust its 7,565‑yard layout as driving distances approach 350 yards. He reaffirmed support for a universal 2030 start date for the Overall Distance Standard test, noting that many classic courses lack the resources to lengthen themselves.
