American Brandon McNulty claimed a surprising victory in the men's road cycling World Championship in Montreal, defeating favorites to become the first U.S. world champion since Lance Armstrong in 1993.

The 273.4km race in Montreal featured a challenging circuit through the city center which riders completed 12 times. McNulty attacked with several laps remaining and built nearly a minute's lead on the favorites group.
