AL West Could Have First Losing Record Champion

Published September 23, 2026 · Updated September 23, 2026 · Fox Sports

With just days left in the regular season, the AL West could make MLB history by crowning a division champion with a losing record.

Currently, the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are tied for first place in the AL West at 78-79. No full-season division champion has ever had a losing record in MLB history.

The only sub-.500 teams to make the postseason were during years with expanded playoffs or labor strikes, such as Houston and Milwaukee in the 2020 shortened season and the Kansas City Royals in 1981. saltysenoritaaz.com
