Shai Hope produced a magnificent unbeaten 162 to power West Indies to a five-wicket victory over India in the third ODI at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. Chasing 352, West Indies reached 352/5 in 48.2 overs to register a memorable win, although India had already sealed the three-match series after winning the first two ODIs.
Hope anchored the chase with a superb 143-ball innings, combining control with aggression as West Indies kept pace with the asking rate throughout the second half of their innings. Gudakesh Motie remained unbeaten on 19 off 14 balls as West Indies completed their highest successful ODI chase.
India had earlier posted 351/7 after being asked to bat first, with KL Rahul scoring an unbeaten 129 off 86 balls and Rohit Sharma making 92 off 85.
The venue in Mullanpur hosted its first men’s ODI, becoming India’s 51st venue to stage a match in the format. Anshul Kamboj made his ODI debut for India, while Mohammed Siraj came into the XI in place of Ravindra Jadeja.
India endured a disastrous start after Shubman Gill was dismissed for one off five balls and Virat Kohli was out for a duck. Jayden Seales removed both batters in the same over as India were reduced to 4/2 in 2.3 overs. India managed only 28 runs in the powerplay.
Rohit then steadied the innings, reaching his half-century in 58 balls. In the process, he also completed 10,000 ODI runs as an opener. He was eventually dismissed for 92 off 85 balls with India on 141/3.
Ruturaj Gaikwad continued the recovery with a half-century from 64 balls before falling for 57 off 69. Naman Dhir added a brisk 30 off 21 balls before India were reduced to 225/5.
Rahul then took control of the innings. He brought up his half-century in 41 balls and reached his century from 80 deliveries. He remained unbeaten on 129 off 86 balls, while Gurnoor Brar finished on eight not out as India closed on 351/7.
West Indies’ chase got off to a shaky start when John Campbell was dismissed for 10 off seven balls by Siraj. But Hope and Amir Jangoo quickly shifted the momentum, putting together a crucial partnership.
Hope reached his half-century from 46 balls, while Jangoo also brought up his fifty in 47 deliveries. Their partnership was eventually broken when Jangoo was run out for 67 off 56 balls, giving India a much-needed breakthrough at 150/2.
Sherfane Rutherford was then dismissed for 24 off 25 balls, but Hope continued to dictate the chase. He brought up his century from 104 balls and remained composed as the target came within West Indies’ reach.
Keemo Paul’s 44 off 35 balls provided further momentum before Brar dismissed him at 271/4. Matthew Forde was removed for seven off 12 balls, but Hope remained untroubled at the other end.
He took West Indies to victory in 48.2 overs as Motie provided the support.
