Women’s Asia Cup 2026, PAK-W vs THA-W: Can Thailand repeat 2022 heroics against Pakistan?

October 6, 2022, remains a historic day for Thailand Women as they stunned Pakistan in the Women’s Asia Cup. In Sylhet, Thailand first restricted Pakistan to 116/5 before chasing down the target with four wickets and one ball to spare.

In three WT20I encounters between the two teams so far, Pakistan and Thailand have won once each, while one match ended in a no-result. Now, after four years, they are set to lock horns once again at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 1 in the ongoing 10th edition of the Women’s Asia Cup.

Eyes will also be on regular skipper Naruemol Chaiwai, who missed the India clash after sustaining an ankle injury against Hong Kong, China. Thipatcha Putthawon led the side in her absence.

Battle to watch out for: Natthakan Chantham vs Fatima Sana

Natthakan Chantham is currently Thailand’s second-highest run-scorer in WT20Is, with 2,772 runs in 123 innings. She has also enjoyed facing Pakistan, scoring 134 runs in three innings at an average of 44.66 and a strike rate of 110.74, including two fifties.

In Thailand’s famous 2022 win, Chantham was named Player of the Match after scoring 61 off 51 balls during the successful chase. Even in their 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup clash, which ended in a no-result, Thailand posted 150/3 in 20 overs, with Chantham top-scoring with 56 off 50.

Pakistan, therefore, will be desperate to dismiss her early. Their best option could be captain Fatima Sana, the current seventh-ranked WT20I all-rounder in the world.

This will be Fatima’s first game against Thailand, and her ability to swing the new ball, particularly during the powerplay, could make her battle with Chantham an intriguing one to watch.
