Diamond League: Doha Season-Opener Postponed To June Amid Middle East Uncertainty
Doha: The opening meet of the 2026 Diamond League season in Doha has been postponed from May to June due to ongoing uncertainty linked to tensions in the Middle East. Organisers confirmed the decision after reviewing safety considerations for athletes, officials, and spectators.
Originally scheduled for May 8, the Doha meet traditionally launches the elite track and field series. However, with the change, the Shanghai meet on May 16 is now set to open the Diamond League season.
In a statement, Diamond League organisers said they had been closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local authorities and stakeholders. “In the interests of athlete and spectator safety, a decision has now been taken to postpone the meeting. Should conditions allow, it will now be held on June 19,” the statement read.
The revised schedule also brings a venue change. Due to higher temperatures expected in Qatar during June, the competition will shift to Khalifa International Stadium, which is equipped with advanced cooling technology previously used during the 2019 World Athletics Championships.
Qatar has emerged as a major hub for global sporting events in recent years, but regional instability has forced several high-profile adjustments. The postponement of the Diamond League meet follows other disruptions, including the cancellation of a planned Argentina vs Spain “Finalissima” football match and the rescheduling of Qatar’s MotoGP race to November.
Meanwhile, Formula One races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia scheduled for April were also called off.
Despite the changes, organisers remain hopeful that the Doha meet can proceed safely in June, allowing the Diamond League to begin its season with minimal disruption.

KKR vs LSG IPL 2026 Predicted Playing 11: Varun Chakravarthy OUT, Sunil Narine IN, will Arjun Tendulkar…
KKR vs LSG IPL 2026: Kolkata Knight Riders made the unprecedented move of playing without their ace spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine in their rained-out last match against the Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday. KKR are likely to face a similar dilemma as they take on Lucknow Super Giants in match no. 15 of the IPL 2026 season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.
The home team are set to miss the services of world No. 1 T20I bowler Varun Chakravarthy, who is nursing an injury to his finger. Although Chakravarthy was seen in training with the KKR team on Wednesday, Ajinkya Rahane’s team are unlikely to risk playing him.
“Varun had injured the little finger on his left hand while taking Abhishek’s (Sharma) catch in the match vs SRH. The medical team has been working closely with him. He bowled his full set at training today,” a KKR statement read on Wednesday.
Former West Indies all-rounder Narine, on the other hand, missed the last game against PBKS due to illness but has reportedly regained his fitness for Thursday’s match. “Sunil had fallen ill on the morning of our match vs PBKS, ‘cause of which he wasn’t a part of the XI. He has since been feeling better, and trained with the team both yesterday and today – batted and bowled,” the KKR statement added.
With Chakravarthy out of the playing 11, KKR could continue with all-rounder Anukul Roy, who can bowl left-arm spin and is a big hitter with the bat. There are also reports that Australia’s Cameron Green, who was bought for Rs 25.2 crore at the IPL 2026 mini auction last month, could be fit enough to bowl starting with Thursday night’s fixture.
Rishabh Pant’s LSG, on the other hand, have switched between Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan in the pace bowling department. They have also preferred the likes of M. Siddharth ahead of Arjun Tendulkar, who was traded from Mumbai Indians to LSG ahead of the season. Barring any injuries in LSG squad, it is unlikely that Arjun Tendulkar will be making his LSG debut anytime soon.

KKR vs LSG IPL 2026: Three-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders are still hunting their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season as they get ready to face Lucknow Super Giants in match No. 15 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday. Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise only have one point to their name so far, thanks to a washed-out encounter at the Eden Gardens against Punjab Kings earlier this week.
Rishabh Pant’s LSG, on the other hand, managed to post their first win of the season in Hyderabad with skipper leading them to five-wicket victory with his unbeaten fifty. Sanjiv Goenka’s LSG will look to build on that win in their ‘second home’ in Kolkata as they take on the beleaguered KKR outfit.
Ajinkya Rahane’s team are still unclear when Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana will be available to play for the side. They are, however, expected to receive a big boost with Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who was bought for a whopping amount of Rs 25.2 crore, available to possibly bowl for the first time this season on Thursday.
The biggest concern for the two teams will be the weather in Kolkata as the practice session on Wednesday was once again interrupted by a downpour. Both KKR and LSG will be hoping that the rain relents for long enough time for a full match to take place at the Eden Gardens on Thursday.
LSG hold the edge when it comes to head-to-head encounters against KKR. Rishabh Pant-led side have won 4 out of the six games against the Knight Riders, including the last match between the two sides in IPL 2025 by four runs.
