Shafique’s classy century leads Pakistan’s response on day two

Shafique, drafted in as an emergency replacement just days before the match, finished the day unbeaten on 107 off 185 balls, an innings built on 10 fours and two sixes at Queen’s Park Oval.

Babar, who alone emerged with credit from the first Test after an unbeaten 58 in a heavy defeat, was similarly unbowed on 86 from 126 balls, including 10 fours and a six.

The pair added 168 for the third wicket, making the most of ideal batting conditions after Shafique had earlier partnered with Azan Awais.

Awais struck 10 fours in a 71-ball 55 before falling to left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.

Shafique had replaced Imam-ul-Haq, dismissed by Shamar Joseph, and was playing his first Test since losing his place following South Africa’s tour of Pakistan last October after Shan Masood’s finger injury opened the door.

West Indies were without Justin Greaves for the bowling effort due to a leg injury, while captain Roston Chase’s involvement was limited because of a finger problem, easing Pakistan’s path.

Earlier, West Indies had extended their first innings by 109 runs in the morning session. Greaves and Chase had put on 96 for the sixth wicket before Ali Usman removed Greaves for 73, and Ubaid Shah bowled Chase for 70. Sajid Khan claimed the last three wickets, finishing with 4-85.
