From the Proteas’ opening test to an India-Pakistan showdown, the 2027 World Cup group stage offers plenty to look forward to.
The fixtures are out, and South African cricket fans can start choosing their seats. With the men’s ODI World Cup returning to the country for the first time since 2003, some of the biggest contests arrive before the Super Sevens.
Here are five group matches that stand out.
India v Australia – 7 October, Cape Town
The group stage begins with a repeat of the 2023 final. Defending champions Australia meet India at Newlands, giving the tournament an early heavyweight contest.
For spectators, it is an opportunity to watch two leading contenders measure themselves against each other immediately. Neither side will want to spend the rest of the group stage recovering from an opening defeat.

South Africa v New Zealand – 9 October, Cape Town
The Proteas begin their campaign against opponents who have caused them considerable World Cup frustration. South Africa’s victory over New Zealand in 2023 ended a 24-year wait for a win against the Black Caps at the men’s ODI tournament.
Opening at home brings its own demands. A convincing performance would give the Proteas early points and offer an expectant crowd something to believe in.
India v Pakistan – 10 October, Johannesburg
The Wanderers gets one of cricket’s biggest fixtures on the opening weekend of the group stage. India face Pakistan three days after their meeting with Australia, making for a demanding start to their campaign.
For South African supporters without a direct stake in the result, this could be the standout neutral ticket. The occasion alone should make the Bullring a compelling place to be.

South Africa v England – 16 October, Gqeberha
This is the middle fixture of the Proteas’ five-match group campaign, positioned between their meetings with Qualifier B and Bangladesh. Depending on the opening results, victory here could put the hosts in a strong qualifying position or provide a much-needed recovery.
South Africa demolished England by 229 runs at the 2023 World Cup. That result will offer fond memories, but it provides no guarantee against opponents.
