Lovemore Charges to World Championship Silver in Poznań as South African Trio Flies the Flag

South Africa’s Hamish Lovemore delivered another masterclass in tactical distance racing on Sunday, storming to a silver medal in the Men’s K-1 5,000m on the final day of the 2026 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Poznań, Poland.

Lovemore’s podium finish served as the crowning moment of a determined campaign by South Africa’s three-paddler contingent on Lake Malta, which also featured seasoned Olympic veterans Bridgitte Hartley and Esti Olivier testing themselves against the world’s elite.

Lovemore’s Late Charge Clinches Silver

Entering the regatta with high expectations following a decorated international pedigree across marathon and sprint disciplines, Lovemore executed a patient, tactical race in Sunday’s Men’s K-1 5,000m final.

The 27-year-old Paris 2024 Olympian bided his time in fourth position for the majority of the distance, riding the wakes behind a breakaway lead group. As the race neared the finish line, Lovemore unleashed a blistering final sprint, overtaking Norway’s Amund Vold and defending champion Mads Brandt Pedersen of Denmark.

Lovemore hunted down Portuguese multi-world champion Fernando Pimenta in a thrilling dash to the line, finishing just 1.45 seconds adrift to stop the clock at 24:17.17. The result secures Lovemore back-to-back World Championship silver medals in the 5,000m event, following his podium finish in Milan last year.

Earlier in the regatta, Lovemore also lined up in the Men’s K-1 1,000m Olympic discipline, advancing through the heats and semi-finals to finish 10th overall (first in the B Final).

Hartley and Olivier Lead Women’s Charge

London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Bridgitte Hartley returned to the world stage with a dual campaign across both distance and sprint events. In the gruelling Women’s K-1 5,000m Final A, Hartley placed 15th overall in 29:55.97. The veteran campaigner also contested the Women’s K-1 1,000m, finishing sixth in the B Final (15th overall) in a time of 4:48.76.

Esti Olivier spearheaded South Africa’s short-course sprint assault, taking on the high-octane 200m and 500m events. In the Women’s K-1 200m, Olivier clocked 44.70 in a lightning-fast semi-final to finish eighth. She returned to the water for the Women’s K-1 500m, finishing seventh in Final C in 1:59.40.
